Delivery Robots Industry Developments

July 2023: Kollmorgen, a global leader in motion control systems, introduced Kollmorgen Express Delivery. This marks products with high demand in motion — including top-requested configuration and option types — that can be delivered by Kollmorgen more quickly than usual. Throughout the years, machine builders have benefited from having many standard product configurations, features, and options available through Kollmorgen. This extensive portfolio is designed to meet the needs of a wide range of industries and applications; however, it can make fast delivery difficult when materials are scarce. Now, customers can configure a servo system with specific AKM motors and matching cables along with AKD2G drives in as few as six weeks delivery time under Express Delivery. For those only needing an AKM motor, delivery times are as short as four weeks.

Uber will team up with Mitsubishi Electric and autonomous robotics startup Cartken to bring self-driving sidewalk robots to Japan in February 2024 to deliver food to their customers. The Uber Eats app will enable users to access the service, which is slated for launch by the end of March in a specified zone within Tokyo whose operating schedule will be disclosed closer to its start date. In Fairfax, Virginia, and Miami, Uber partnered with Cartken on delivery services in 2019. The former Google engineers who made Bookbot then brought it over internationally under this new agreement that includes Mitsubishi Electric for operations oversight throughout Tokyo.

Global mobility technology company Magna has agreed to produce Cartken’s autonomous delivery robot fleet so as to satisfy increasing demands for last-mile deliveries, according to an announcement made jointly by both companies based out of San Francisco in September 2022. A Magna facility located in Michigan has already started manufacturing Cartken’s Model C. Production capabilities are predicted to grow over the next several months while further autonomous delivery models based on the same platform but designed for various use cases alongside robot-as-a-service business models will be added into the mix as this collaboration expands.

Ottonomy launched autonomous delivery robots at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky, Rome Fiumicino International Airport and Pittsburgh in January 2023. The Posten Norge company, located in Oslo, Norway uses Ottonomy robots for automating first-mile and last-mile deliveries. Besides, Goggo of Madrid, Spain, also employs Ottonomy robots to automate first-mile and last-mile deliveries.

Also, Canada and Saudi Arabia are working with industry partners while more are to be launched by 2023 across Europe, the USA as well as Asia.

GrubHub, a leading marketplace for food ordering and delivery, and Starship Technologies, the pioneer provider of self-governing transportation systems, have announced their alliance to roll out robot deliveries targeting university campuses in America by October 2022.

Magna International Mobility Technology Company and Cartken, a San Francisco-based Autonomous Robotics firm, signed an agreement in September 2022 where Magna will manufacture Cartken's autonomous delivery robot fleet in response to increasing demand for last-mile distribution.
