Glamox, a lighting solutions company, has secured a contract with PGS, a Norwegian maritime seismic survey business, to supply marine LED lighting for eight of its seismic data gathering boats.
The first phase of the conversion project will replace the fluorescent tube lighting with about 2,500 marine-certified LED luminaires installed on the outside and interior of the eight boats. Glamox said that PGS's decision to transition to energy-efficient LED lighting is motivated by a desire to meet emission reduction objectives, new legislation, and its own sustainability ambitions.
The LED luminaires will be installed on eight boats that operate worldwide: Ramform Vanguard, Atlas, Titan, Hyperion, Tethys, Victory, Sovereign, and PGS Apollo.
The interior illumination will illuminate the bridge, crew quarters, hallways, gangways, stairwells, ladders, and common spaces. Outside illumination also includes floodlights and emergency lighting. Glamox said that the specialty luminaires are marine-certified and can resist the roughest circumstances.
"The retrofit of these vessels with energy-efficient LED luminaires should enable us to save energy used for lighting by as much as 60 percent," said Olaf Brunstad, VP Fleet Management, PGS. "It is the initial step of a massive refit project that will continue until 2025. Eventually, we want to upgrade each vessel with around 2,500 new luminaires. This project adds to our objective of reducing emissions by 75% and achieving a Net Zero carbon impact by 2050.
"Our very energy efficient lighting assists clients in reducing the carbon impact of their boats. It is the low-hanging fruit in terms of energy savings and immediately benefits vessel owners' sustainability initiatives," said Astrid Simonsen Joos, Glamox's Group CEO. "The recent emission reduction targets from the International Maritime Organization and the phase-out of fluorescent lighting due to EU directives, add extra impetus to major retrofit projects across the maritime industry."
The International Maritime Organization has established a target of Net Zero emissions from shipping by 2050, as well as a 70% decrease in GHG emissions - with an aim of 80% - by 2040 compared to 2008 levels.
