On July 29, 2023, the Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies (Kufos) announced signing a MoU with Meridian Biotech, a Texas-based industrial biotechnology company, for the production and testing of protein-rich fishmeal derived from indigenous non-fish raw materials. The pact for fishmeal production will enable Kufos to address critical environmental challenges and major concerns related to the large-scale juvenile catch used for fishmeal production to enhance the quality of aquaculture products.
On Aug. 11, 2023, Pelagia launched an innovative fishmeal line, Pro-Allo, enabling health and growth benefits for aquaculture. Produced in Norway from sustainably sourced fish and strict standards as high-quality Group 1 fishmeal, Pro-Allo is formulated to support a biological process called allostasis that fights stress caused by changes in environment and handling.
Pelagia sources the freshest raw materials from a dedicated supply chain incorporating new quality parameters about storage time, temperature, handling, and distribution. Increased freshness of fishmeal accelerates higher growth rates in fish.
On Aug. 11, 2023, ICAR- Central Institute of Brackishwater Aquaculture (India) announced a partnership with Insectika Biotech Pvt. Ltd. for consultancy services and collaborative research towards BSF meal for aquaculture feed formulation, using Black Soldier Fly (Hermetia illucens). Through this MoU, the partners will explore the possibilities of using BSF meals as a sustainable substitute for fishmeals and soybeans.
On May 22, 2023, Scoular announced the acquisition of Northwest Farm Food Cooperative's frozen fish processing facility in Burlington. The facility will support Scoular's pet nutrition business, upcycling fish trimmings and processing to turn them into frozen fish ingredients to be used in pet food and treat processors. Additionally, the newly acquired facility complements its JV with Da Yang Seafood and Bornstein Seafoods and the new fishmeal processing facility in Oregon constructed by these companies.
