On Aug. 25, 2023, Biotechnologists at the Norwegian Research Centre (NORCE) announced they had improved a protein powder made from fish byproducts by tailoring enzymes. This chemical causes fish protein powder to smell fishy, which can be removed, opening the door for use in protein shakes and meal replacements. NORCE biotechnologists aim to design an enzyme process for seafood producers to enable them to make their business more profitable and to keep as much of the biomass as possible food-grade.

It uses proprietary hydrolysis technology to extract nutrients from the fish sustainably, turning offcuts into high-value nutrition products with minimal waste. In HBC's proprietary process, only enzymes hydrolyze protein from the fish is converted into peptides, leaving the oil and bones untouched. The peptides are then separated into unprocessed natural fish oil (OmeGo) and natural marine collagen and calcium (CalGo).
