Toshiba Electronics Europe GmbH has recently released a new photovoltaic output photocoupler with increased open-circuit voltage. The recent invention is mainly designed to be used in solid-state relay (SSR) applications for automotive uses but it can also be used for industrial applications like renewable energy.


In the recent past, automotive applications have become more challenging and now demand safer, compact as well as maintenance-free solutions with longer lifetimes. For these reasons SSRs are increasingly replacing traditional mechanical relays. In electric mobility application lack of physical contacts guarantees reliability and quiet operation.


The new TLX9910 photocoupler is suitable for gating high-voltage power MOSFETs that are commonly used in solid-state relays. Combination of these two enables high-voltage, high-current switching, which cannot be achieved through integrated photorelays.


Automotive battery management systems (BMS) often require a higher gate-drive voltage to MOSFETs that must handle significant power. Most existing photovoltaic couplers have low output voltages limiting their selection range for applicable MOSFETs hence two such connected in series will work around this.


This new TLX9910 gives an open voltage (VOC) of 13.5V – nearly doubling current devices; hence additional compatible MOSFETs are chosen without any work-around solution being necessary. Cost reduction is realized by decreasing component count when one device is employed thereby reducing size, weight and cost of the solution.


Since its electrical energy generation occurs due to light from the input side LED on which it generate electricity., making it possible therefore eliminates its own power supply requirements thus there would be no need to provide external power source.


The TLX9910 is housed in a very small surface-mount 4-pin SO6 package measuring just 3.7mm × 7.0mm x 2.1mm. Additionally, it can work at a temperature of -40°C to +125°C and provides 3750Vrms of isolation from input to output. The new device is in mass production.
