Vapor Deposition Market
October 2023- Sandvik Scientific Council has awarded the Sandvik Innovation Prize 2023 to a team from Sandvik Coromant for their work on TiAlN/TiSiN nano multilayers, a new coating platform for Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD). The team included Lars Johnson, Katherine Calamba Kwick, Carl-Fredrik Carlström, Ebba Saikoff, and Marta Saraiva. PVD is one of two technologies used at Sandvik Machining Solutions for coating cutting tools. By depositing a nano multilayer, i.e., alternating repeating layers of two coating materials, in this case of TiAlN and TiSiN, and controlling the nanolayer thicknesses, a coating with both improved wear resistance and toughness is the result. The coating material concept has also been widened to include grain size control, TiAlN/TiSiN/CrAlN triple multilayers, and TiAlN/TiAlSiN multilayers through iterative R&D work.
November 2023-Â Vishay Thin Films plans to embark on a USD 8.2 million expansion at its Wheatfield facility in an effort to bring in new technology and hire more workers. Originally founded in 1978 as Ohmtek in Niagara Falls, it was acquired by Pennsylvania-based Vishay Intertechnology in 1988, with its name changing to Vishay Thin Films. The 2160 Liberty Drive facility currently works in manufacturing various resistors, a component in the semiconductor supply chain. The new space would be 10,000 square feet, built throughout 2024, with plans to open it by year's end. The USD6 million in new equipment being bought, including lasers, vapor deposition tools, automated test machines, automated optical inspection systems, dicing saws, and mask aligners, will help Vishay remain competitive in its marketplaces, according to company officials. Ross Karipidis, continuous improvement manager, said the expansion was being driven by increased demand for high-precision equipment in the aerospace, military, medical, and automotive industries. Plant manager Joe Donahue said this would be the first phase of its expansion, with additional equipment to be bought at least three years out.
