Amcor Rigid Packaging (ARP) and Ron Rubin Winery have introduced a commercially viable 100% recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET) wine bottle. The companies worked together to develop the screw-top bottle with a barrier layer of silicon oxide (SiOx).
It is the nation's first premium wine bottle made entirely from rPET, according to ARP and Ron Rubin. The playful allusion in the bottle's name, Blue Bin, to the blue recycling bins from which the rPET used to make it was sourced.
The inside of the rPET bottle has an ultra-thin, glass-like oxygen barrier layer that enables it to comply with Ron Rubin's product protection standards. The rPET, which is a more gas-permeable material than glass, is protected from contact with the wine by the silicon oxide (SiOx) covering of the KHS InnoPET Plasmax barrier.
The silicon oxide layer is clear. The Blue Bin wines' colors are displayed as vividly in the clear rPET bottle as they are in the glass. The coated bottle can be recycled alongside bottles made of regular PET and recycled PET.
