Apr 2023: The FDA has recently approved an implant that is only a few hairs wide, intended to address the excessive symptoms of chronic pain. Neuspera Medical, the peripheral nerve stimulation device manufacturer, released the regulatory news. To prevent pain impulses from traveling along peripheral nerves, which are found outside of the brain and spinal cord, Neuspera's PNS system is implanted along these nerves, just like other PNS systems. However, Neuspera refers to this more compact technology version as "ultra-miniaturized." Neuspera claims that this equates to a footprint roughly 75 times smaller than existing PNS devices, potentially enabling medical professionals to access more peripheral nervous system regions than they could with larger implants.
Aug 2023: To treat acute peripheral nerve damage, Epineuron has enrolled the first patient in a trial examining their PeriPulse device. In what it claims to be the largest medical device research for nerve regeneration, the Ontario, Canada-based company REGAIN, seeks to enroll 110 patients in total from both Canada and the US. The PeriPulse system is a transient peripheral nerve stimulation tool. It applies direct electrical impulses to the injured nerve during surgery or soon after. The therapy activates growth-associated gene expression through the promotion of neurotrophic factors.
