To expedite the commercialization of the eVinciTM microreactor, Westinghouse Electric Company today announced the opening of a new design and manufacturing facility close to Pittsburgh's downtown. With the goal of streamlining every step of the microreactor's commercialization process, Westinghouse formed eVinciTM Technologies LLC as a distinct business unit in June 2023.
The eVinci "accelerator," an 87,000-square-foot building in the Etna borough, will house engineering and licencing operations, testing, prototype trials, business development, as well as sales.
A range of applications, including energy and heating for remote communities, universities, mining operations, industrial centres, data centres, and defence facilities, can benefit from the carbon-free, safe, and scalable energy provided by the eVinci Microreactor. It can power systems with electricity output ranging from several kilowatts to five megawatts, delivered twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, for more than eight years without the need for refuelling.

X-Energy Reactor Company LLC, a pioneer in the development of cutting-edge modular nuclear microreactors and fuel technology for clean energy generation, and the U.S. Department of Energy have inked a cooperative agreement to advance the development of a mobile microreactor design. With this agreement, X-energy will be able to continue working on the architecture and critical technologies for the initial design of the company's transportable nuclear power plant, which is being handled by the DOE's Office of Nuclear Energy. It is anticipated that the X-energy microreactor will generate three to five megawatts of electricity at a cost that is competitive with the market.
