  February 2023:  Philips Respironics, a subsidiary of Royal Philips, undertook a voluntary recall notification in the United States and a field safety notice in other countries. The purpose of these actions is to draw attention to potential health hazards associated with the sound abatement foam, which is composed of polyester-based polyurethane (PE-PUR) and is found in specific CPAP, BiPAP, and mechanical ventilator devices. Philips Respironics issued the recall notification/field safety notice on the basis of an initial, limited data set and toxicological risk assessment, as well as a reasonable worst-case scenario assumption regarding the potential health risks. After Philips issued public statements in April 2021 regarding the matter and potential risks to users, and again in June 2021 regarding the recall notification/field safety notice, Philips Respironics encountered a significant surge in complaints purportedly related to foam degradation.
