Landfill Gas Market Analysis

ID: MRFR//8568-HCR | 155 Pages | Author: Priya Nagrale| November 2024

The landfill gas market is predicted to grow greatly over the forecast time period because to global interest in sustainable energy to reduce dependence on petroleum derivatives for electricity. The global landfill gas market is also predicted to grow due to increased electricity demand across end-use sectors. However, the high capital requirements and operational costs of landfill gas aging are expected to hinder market growth over the projected time range.
Good government policies and standards should open openings for landfill gas merchants. According to MNRE statistics, India achieved just ~222 MW of solar and ~25 MW of wind power in Spring due to the pandemic halting all movements. According to the World Bioenergy Association (WBA) report, most respondents cited the pandemic's negative impact on bioenergy company, resulting in a drop in venture and new interest in bioenergy and landfill gas. In 2020, landfill gas treatment companies changed due to less restrictions. Large landfill gas producers including Landfill Frameworks Ltd., Veolia A/S, Squander The executives Inc., and Suez SA faced production closures, causing overabundances and order delays. The landfill gas market is shaped by several factors. Global emphasis on sustainable waste management practices is a key factor.

As societies try to reduce their carbon footprint and environmental impact, landfill gas, a byproduct of decomposing natural garbage, has gained popularity. Landfill gas-to-energy projects help fulfill strict ozone-depleting substance emission regulations by legislatures.

The landfill gas business also relies on public awareness and cultural attitudes toward nature. Drives that repurpose waste into electricity are gaining support as awareness of environmental change and the need for sustainable practices grows. Local networks, natural groups, and organizations are more likely to participate in eco-friendly landfill gas initiatives. This good mood fosters landfill gas industry growth.
Available green power sources also impact market considerations. As renewable energy sources like solar, wind, and others grow increasingly popular, landfill gas confronts competition for resources. Market aspects are shaped by landfill gas projects' overall appeal compared to other green power sources. Landfill gas needs coordinated effort and integration with current energy infrastructure to stay relevant in the green power sector.

The landfill gas market is shaped by a complex interaction of natural and financial factors, technological advances, and administrative procedures. The landfill gas industry may help the globe transition to a more sustainable energy system as it struggles with waste management and environmental change. Partnering to capitalize on landfill gas opportunities requires understanding and managing these market conditions.

July 2023- Scatec ASA has disclosed that it has closed on financing for three solar photovoltaic projects in South Africa with a joint capacity of nearly 273 MW, paving the way for construction to launch in the first quarter of 2024. The P.V. projects, granted through the fifth bid window of South Africa's Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP) in 2021, have a joint worth of USD 270 million.

The REIPPPP refers to an arrangement of swelling electricity generation in South Africa with private sector investment in renewable energy technology such as small hydropower (less than 40 M.W.), solar P.V., biomass, concentrated solar, landfill gas, onshore wind power, and biogas. Norway-based Scatec ASA, formerly called Scatec Solar ASA, authorized power purchase and deployment agreements for Grootfontein PV 1, Grootfontein PV 3, and Grootfontein PV 2, all situated in Western Cape, in December 2022. It is predicted the three solar plants will assist South Africa in removing a projected 630,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide annually.

The company has nearly 51% stake in the projects while H1 Holdings, its South Africa Black Economic Empowerment partner, holds 46.5%, with Community Trust taking up the lasting 2.5%.June 2023- Environmental and advocacy groups directed by the Environmental Integrity Project have petitioned the U.S. EPAfor better guidelines over methane pollution from MSW landfills. The groups intend the EPA to develop supplies for gas collection systems at landfills and enforce accurate supplies for directly measuring methane.

They also support composting and waste decrease plans for further methane reduction.July 2023- A global expert in the production of renewable natural gas (RNG) from landfills, Waga Energy, and a regional solid waste, recycling, and resource management services company in the US, Casella Waste Systems, Inc. (CWST), contracted an agreement on 10 July to build RNG projects at three CWST landfills.

Landfill Gas Market Trends

  • Growing environmental awareness and emphasis on sustainable waste management to drive market growth

Market CAGR influencing the landfill gas market is the emphasis on sustainable waste management and rising environmental awareness. This motivator stems from the growing awareness of landfill gas's harmful effects on the environment and human health and the demand for efficient waste management solutions. Methane and carbon dioxide, two powerful greenhouse gases contributing to climate change, comprise most landfill gas.

In landfills, organic waste breaks down and releases methane as a byproduct. Methane is a serious worry for environmentalists and policymakers because it has a much higher potential to cause global warming than carbon dioxide. Landfill gas is thought to account for about 3% of all methane emissions worldwide.

The negative impacts of landfill gas go beyond the production of greenhouse gases. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and hazardous air pollutants (HAPs), which can hurt air quality and human health, are also in the gas. These pollutants have the potential to worsen cardiovascular and respiratory conditions as well as contribute to smog production.

There is a growing need for sustainable waste management strategies that effectively reduce the discharge of landfill gas into the atmosphere as public awareness of these environmental and health effects rises. People are searching for eco-friendly options and becoming more aware of the need to lower their carbon footprint.

This awareness encourages people, groups, and organizations to adopt behaviors that reduce waste production and increase recycling and composting activities. Many waste management solutions are being implemented to lessen the amount of organic waste delivered to landfills in response to this rising need. The creation of systems for the collection and use of landfill gas is one such approach. Gas collecting wells and pipes are put in place to capture the gas rather than letting it escape into the atmosphere.

The gas that has been captured can then be utilized as a useful resource. There is a lot of interest in using landfill gas as a renewable energy source. Processes like combustion, gasification, or anaerobic digestion can turn methane into heat or power. This energy can be utilized locally to run the landfill operations or supplied into the grid to increase overall energy. Utilizing landfill gas not only encourages energy independence and diversification of the energy mix but also aids in lowering greenhouse gas emissions.

The expansion of the landfill gas market has also been supported by improvements in gas treatment technologies and the implementation of regulations. Gas is cleaned of pollutants using technologies like gas scrubbers and condensers, ensuring its cleanliness for usage. Governments and regulatory agencies have established strict rules and reduction objectives in response to their recognition of the significance of reducing landfill gas emissions.

The implementation of landfill gas management projects may occasionally be encouraged with the help of financial incentives and subsidies. Thus, driving the Landfill Gas market revenue.
