October 2023- Huntsman is halting an assignment that would generate ultra-pure ethylene carbonate (UPEC) utilized in the electric vehicle batteries due to massive imports from China, which has generated pricing to fall by 75%, the US-based manufacturer said on October 16th. The company said in prepared remarks about its Q3 earnings that the present pricing level will not produce the returns the company would anticipate, and they took the hard decision to suspend the project. Once the company observes indications that pricing for UPEC will get better, it can complete the project within 12 months. Huntsman is known to be the single manufacturer of ultra-pure ethylene carbonate across the North American region. The firm had strategized to enhance the UPEC capacity to up to 20,000 tonnes/year at its facility situated in Conroe, Texas. The project would have been finished by the end of 2023. HUNTSMAN PROCEEDS WITH OTHER PROJECTSHuntsman is proceeding with two other expansion projects. One will increase the capacity of spray foam catalysts. The other will increase the capacity for specialty amines that are used to make cleaning solutions for computer chips. The specialty amines will replace other substances that are more harmful to the environment. Huntsman expects to complete both projects in the first half of 2024.
