The growth of the electrochromic glass market has been significant over the last few years due to increasing demand for efficient energy management and smart building solutions. Electrochromic glass or smart glass is capable of changing its optical attributes after receiving electric stimulation thereby controlling the amount of light and heat that enters into a building. This breakthrough technology has spread across various end use industries like construction sector, automobile industry, aerospace among others.
Within construction sector, electrochromic glass will be increasingly used because of growing concerns about sustainable buildings and energy conservation. It also goes a long way in reducing cooling loads by dynamically controlling solar gain resulting from sunlight penetration into a structure hence lowering HVAC consumption levels for cooling air flow systems. In the wake of strict energy efficiency policies being introduced globally, architects as well as developers are including this product in their designs to meet these requirements.
Automotive industry has also played a very important part in the growth of Electrochromic Glass Market. Smart glass incorporation in automotive windows presents various advantages such as increased privacy, reduced glare and improved passenger’s comfort. Furthermore, electrochromic technology is being used by car makers to improve driving experience with provision of a user-controlled transparency for windows. This adds some luxury and goes hand-in-hand with the growing trend of connected and smart vehicles.
Also, the aerospace sector has experienced an increase in adoption of electrochromic glass for aircraft windows. Smart glass provides sunlight control and minimizes glare which are particularly valuable in aviation hence advancing safety and comfort of passengers as well as staff members. As airlines seek lightweight materials that can enhance fuel efficiency, electrochromic glass becomes a possible solution addressing both aesthetic and functional aspects of airplane designs.

Recent Development
In January 2022, announced its partnership with Nabr, a home design company, to build houses using sustainable products. In every Nabr home, View’s Smart Windows, which can adjust automatically and ensure constant access to sun rays and outdoor scenes while minimizing heat and glare, will be installed.
In October 2021, Saint-Gobain confirmed the acquisition of IMPAC. The move is aimed at expanding its footprint and presence in the Latin America Region.
Viracon Plus by Viracon, launched in July 2021, is driven by the electrochromic technology from Halio Inc. Viracon Plus reduces energy use in buildings by adjusting the tint for occupants’ comfort level while maximizing natural light levels.
May 2022 saw the release of a light-controlled panoramic roof with a low-E coating by AGC. AGC is an international glass manufacturer that has come up with groundbreaking ideas in different areas, such as the automation and construction industries.
In May 2023, Glass Dyenamics, an electrochromic glass manufacturer, reported that it had completed 150k cycles over 5k hours according to ASTM E2141-21 durability conditions (Glass Dyenamics). This achievement was made together with the US Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). By adopting electrochromic windows, one may prevent up to 78 million metric tons per year of CO2 ‚ emissions by 2030 or save as much energy as consumed by approximately nine million more homes per year than occupied last year, and utility bills would exceed $19 billion.
In February 2022, Ambilight invested through Nio Capital in a color-changing electrochromic technology developer that could adjust glass light transmission. With this investment, Nio has included color-changing roofs made out of glass in its latest car models.
Guardian Industries Holdings, LLC unveiled in October 2023 SunGuard SNX 70+, a triple silver-coated glass that has a visible light transmission of 68% and a solar heat gain coefficient of 0.28 when applied to Guardian UltraClear low-iron glass. This piece of glass was designed to have the same neutral color when looked at from any angle. It still looks great, even if they view it indirectly or directly.
