Coagulant Market Overview

The global coagulant market is projected to reach approximately USD 10.1 Billion by 2030, at a CAGR of 6.41% from 2022 to 2030. To remove suspended particulates from water, coagulants are used. In the water treatment business, coagulants are generally used to separate suspended solids and extract color, odor, and taste from the water. Water treatment typically involves using several coagulant types, such as inorganic coagulants, organic coagulants, or a combination of both. The oil and gas, paper and pulp, and agricultural industries are some of the coagulant end consumers.  The coagulants can be categorized as organic or inorganic, depending on the type.To address the demand for eco-friendly materials in the wastewater treatment industry, a research group from the Gas Processing Centre at Qatar University (QU) has created a revolutionary technique. To treat wastewater contaminated with colloidal suspension and having very small suspended particles, the Chemical Engineering Department at QU looked at various environmentally friendly materials. A dependable and effective method to clear colloidal suspension is coagulation/flocculation. To combine the colloids in wastewater and create larger particulates that will settle down due to gravity, a chemical agent known as a coagulant or flocculant must be added. The study team's analysis revealed a novel use of natural deep eutectic solvents based on choline chloride as a coagulant for colloidal particles. For the first time, the study team was able to create, describe, put to the test, and demonstrate the efficiency of choline chloride-based Nades as a coagulant.

COVID-19 Impact Analysis

The outbreak of Covid-19 hurt the global coagulants market. The market was already facing challenges due to the declining price of crude oil and the slowdown in economic growth. Demand for coagulants has declined sharply as a result of the lockdown measures imposed by governments across the world. This has led to a significant drop in revenue for manufacturers. In addition, the supply of raw materials has been disrupted, leading to production disruptions and cost increases.

The COVID-19 pandemic is expected to significantly impact the global coagulant market in short to medium term. However, the market is expected to recover in a long time as the global economy recovers from the pandemic.

Market Dynamics

The strict rules governing the discharge and disposal of wastewater from industries are the driving force behind the expansion of the coagulants sector. The development of novel and environment-friendly formulations, which is anticipated to create growth prospects for companies active in the global coagulant market, will be able to meet the rising demand for water and rapid urbanization across the globe.Brenntag, a market leader in the distribution of chemicals and additives, has joined CarboNet Nanotechnologies' distribution network in the US and Canada. Utilizing nanotechnology, the NanoNet platform from CarboNet creates formulae that bind specific compounds in wastewater to aid in the removal of impurities. The line of solutions gives the Oil & Gas, Quarrying, and Industrial wastewater sectors the simplicity and efficiency to make water treatment increasingly successful and affordable through an innovative method leveraging drug delivery polymers. For sludge reduction, oil and metal removal, water clarifying, and recycled generated water, the platform comprises flocculants and coagulants.

Drivers

  • The strict laws that govern how effluent from industries is discharged and disposed

The necessity to monitor and regulate water quality has become essential due to the ongoing growth in the volume of untreated sewage and the release of dangerous chemicals and materials into water bodies. As part of pollution control measures aimed at safeguarding watersheds and drinking water sources, governing authorities like the US Environmental Protection Agency and the Urban Waste-Water Treatment Directive (Europe) have imposed tight environmental regulatory frameworks. It is anticipated that this will accelerate the expansion of the coagulant market worldwide.

Restraints:

  • The hazards associated with inorganic coagulants

Inorganic coagulants are generally used in wastewater treatment plants to remove suspended solids and other contaminants. However, these coagulants can pose many environmental and human health hazards. For instance, aluminum sulfate can cause skin irritation and respiratory problems, while iron sulfate can lead to gastrointestinal issues. Moreover, both chemicals can potentially contaminate groundwater supplies. As a result of these hazards, the growth of the coagulants market is likely to be hampered in the future.

Opportunities:

  • The development of innovative and eco-friendly formulations

Rapid industrialization and urbanization across the globe are the significant factors projected to drive the growth of the coagulant market. The effluent and sewage generated from industries and households contain many dissolved impurities, which must be treated before being discharged into the environment. Coagulants are used in wastewater treatment as they help in the precipitation of dissolved contaminants, thus making the water fit for reuse or discharge. The rising awareness among the masses regarding the importance of clean water is projected to fuel the demand for coagulants in the coming years.

The players operating in the coagulant market are focused on developing innovative and eco-friendly formulations to gain a competitive edge. Manufacturers invest in research and development activities to create cost-effective, environment-friendly coagulants. The growing demand for green chemicals is expected to provide lucrative growth opportunities for the players operating in the coagulant market.

Segment Overview

By Type

Based on type, the global coagulant market has been divided into organic {polyamines, polyDADMACs, melamine formaldehyde, and others}, inorganic {aluminum sulfate, ferric chloride, polyaluminum chloride (PAC), polyaluminum sulfate (PAS), ferric sulfate and others} and organic & inorganic blend. The organic segment held the largest market value share; further divisions of the organic market include polyamines, polyDADMAC, melamine-formaldehyde, and others. In the market, polyamine and polyDADMAC are the two organic coagulants that are most frequently employed due to their excellent efficacy and green attributes.

By End-Use

Based on end-use, the global coagulant market is divided into water and wastewater treatment, pulp and paper, oil and gas, agriculture, and others. The water and wastewater treatment sector dominates the global market. The extensive use of coagulants in the chemical, power, and municipal water treatment industries is responsible for the high demand in this market.

As it ramps production, PHARMANIAGA Bhd anticipates that the current shortage of pharmaceuticals will normalize by the end of July or August. To market halal ovine (sheep & goat) anti-coagulant in Malaysia, Pharmaniaga and Ronnsi signed a Memorandum of Understanding. Halal ovine anti-coagulant can meet unmet needs for halal pharmaceuticals and has room to grow, particularly among Muslim populations and nations. Pharmaniaga is currently collaborating with Ronnsi to import and produce the halal anti-coagulant and to submit the necessary documentation to the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia for halal certification and the National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency for approval.
