Electric Vehicles Loses 12 Percent Range in Cold Temperatures

By Shubhendra Anand , 13 February, 2024

Electric vehicles are in great demand in light of the global clean energy transition. The green energy outlooks expect to achieve net zero emissions by the end of 2050. However, deviating from conventional fuels and vehicles can significantly change the transition to clean energy. The demand for electric cars has grown and is expected to reach new records in 2024. However, EVs are supposed to be affected by certain vehicle limitations that may create hurdles in sales.

Experts suggest that electric vehicles can reduce 12 percent of their range in lower temperature areas. Therefore, electric cars in cold countries may see a drop in sales if the problem continues to grow. The American Automobile Association (AAA) notes that electric vehicles can witness a drop in range when the temperature level dips up to 20 degrees Fahrenheit. This can result in a slower charging pace reduction by double in the new models and up to triple the reduction in charging older EV models. Therefore, electric vehicles in the new production set supply the model with a heat pump to revive the range up to 15 percent from 3 percent for 50 miles. Experts believe that electric vehicles without well-equipped heat pumps are expected to slow down in sales if consumers find it a bit challenging to do vehicle maintenance. The adoption of electric vehicles is expected to grow in 2024; therefore, production in the automobile sector must focus on building heat pumps along with electric vehicles for better efficiency.

With the growing demand for electric vehicles in the market, the automobile sector is expected to understand consumers' current limitations better. However, the increasing demand for electric cars will lead to more alterations and inventions in the automobile sector. This indicates a better supply of features in the newly manufactured electric vehicles from 2024.
