Artificial Intelligence Affects the Progress of Clean-Energy Powered Grids

By Shubhendra Anand , 27 February, 2024

Clean energy transitions are moving rapidly in different countries worldwide to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. Electric power grids significantly contribute to the transition to clean energy as they help decarbonize. However, experts believe that most countries cannot achieve a transition to green energy by 2050 due to fewer electric grids. The lack of clean energy-powered electricity grids is one of the crucial factors affecting the decarbonization process that ultimately slows it down. Researchers believe 2024 is expected to witness an immense transition to green energy with the increasing adoption of electric vehicle production.

According to different survey results, artificial intelligence-powered data centers have become a utility hurdle. Data centers powering artificial intelligence witness elevated growth, leading to increased tax utilities in 2024. The growth in artificial intelligence-powered data centers is much more than the power demand in the market. In the United States, the energy sector expects to build new natural gas-fired capacity alongside renewable energy capacity. It will help enhance electricity consumption from the data centers. According to survey reports, the United States requires USD 20 billion to set up power lines for long-distance transmissions. However, the current expenditure on power transmission lines is zero in the United States. Therefore, to enhance power transmission, the reasons mentioned above are the major hurdles in the United States.

Based on the surveys, the electricity consumption from the data centers can double its current size by the end of 2026; the same is predicted for artificial intelligence. There are fewer clean energy-powered electricity grids in the United States, which makes its infrastructure less operative. Experts say only one-fifth of the electricity is generated from renewable energy sources in the United States. Therefore, the United States' grid operators are expected to face some challenges. Renewable energy sources offer slow solar and wind energy to the grids to build a whole new data center in a limited time. Since artificial intelligence can enhance data transmission precisely and accurately, clean energy-powered electricity grids are progressing a bit slower
