    • June 2023: To promote overall animal welfare and a robust food chain, Canada and Manitoba are spending CA$2 million in rural veterinary services districts (VSDs). A funding opportunity of up to CA$ 75,000 will be available to each VSD to help expand their services within their area and acquire large-animal veterinary equipment. The money comes from Canada's federal, provincial, and territorial governments through the recently established Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership, a five-year, US$2.6 billion (CAD$3.5 billion) investment that supports the country's agri-food and agri-products industries.

    • Apr 2023: In a $1.3 billion agreement, Mars Inc., the company behind Pedigree dog food, is purchasing veterinary equipment company Heska Corp. to grow its animal diagnostics division. Mars said in a joint statement on Monday that it would pay Heska's shareholders $120 per share, representing a 22.9% premium over its most recent price. Heska's stock was up 19.8% at $116.6. The merger is anticipated to close by the companies in the second half of 2023. The privately held candy company, best known for Snickers and M&Ms, has been putting money into its pet care division because it believes the growing number of people owning pets will cause demand to soar. Heska Corp produces diagnostic tools, including animal cancer screening tests, and distributes its goods around several countries.
