On Oct. 11, 2023, Coherent Corp., a leading global provider of materials, networking, and lasers, announced the expansion of its strategic relationships with DENSO and Mitsubishi Electric to capitalize on the significant demand for silicon carbide.
Under the transaction terms, DENSO and Mitsubishi Electric will each invest US$500 MN in Coherent's silicon carbide business in exchange for a 12.5% non-controlling ownership interest, while Coherent will own the remaining 75%. Coherent will enter into long-term supply arrangements to support DENSO and Mitsubishi Electric's demand for 150 mm and 200 mm SiC substrates and epitaxial wafers.
On Oct. 03, 2023, Continental Device India Private Ltd. (CDIL Semiconductors) CDIL inaugurated the new Surface Mount Semiconductor Packaging Line at its Mohali plant. With the new versatile SMA and SMB package line, CDIL has become the first Indian company to manufacture SiC devices. CDIL is scaled to manufacture auto-grade devices, including SiC MOSFETs, rectifiers, Schottky diodes, TVS diodes, and Zener, among others. The expansion of assembly lines will increase CDIL's total SiC components capacity at the facility to 600 million units annually.
On Mar.30, 2023, Samsung announced that it had spent 200 billion won to manufacture SiC power management ICs. The tech giant can manufacture prototypes of certain chips, including silicon carbide (SiC) and gallium nitride (GaN) semiconductors. Samsung formed a Power Semiconductor Task Force in 2023 as its first step to manufacture SiC and GaN chips. Besides the team, Samsung's chip business, the LED team, and the Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology (SAIT) were also part of the task force.
