Sheet Molding Compound SMC Market
July 2023
SABIC, based in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and Houston, Texas, in the United States, is launching two resins that are ideal for thermoforming and sheet extrusion: Stamax 30YH611 and SABIC PP compound H1090. The company claims that it enables customers to form large, complex structural parts by providing an alternative to traditional sheet metal forming, compression, and injection molding.
Top covers, enclosures, and module separators for electric vehicle (EV) battery packs can be made of 30% glass fiber-reinforced polypropylene resins, which are intumescent and flame-retardant (FR). In order to prevent or slow the spread of thermal runaway, both grades provide optimal thermal barrier qualities.

The highly regarded Italian company CPC SRL (CPC), which specialises in the production and distribution of car parts made of carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP), has been fully acquired by the Mitsubishi Chemical Group (MCG Group). The MCG Group's long-term strategic vision to further expand and improve its vertically integrated carbon fibre supply chain is in line with this significant acquisition, which started with minority ownership in 2017. Â
By utilising CPC's design capabilities, moulding technologies, development and proposal power, and its commercial distribution networks with European and American automakers, the MCG Group is well-positioned to speed up the implementation of carbon fibre composite materials, such as Sheet Moulding Compound (CF-SMC) and Prepreg Compression Moulding (PCM), in automotive components. The MCG Group has one of the largest press facilities in the world that can develop and mould large component materials exclusively dedicated to composite materials.
Major players in the sheet molding compound (SMC) market, including POLYTEC Holding AG, IDI Composites International., Polynt, TEIJIN LIMITED., Premix Group, MENZOLIT, Huayuan Advanced Materials Co., Ltd, Core Molding Technologies., Changzhou City Jiangshi Composite Technology Co. Ltd., and others
