The Wind Energy Boom
Carbon fibers made from pitch are super strong and light. They don't expand much when they get hot, and they resist corrosion. These awesome properties make them perfect for using in the main part of wind turbine blades, called the 'spar.' Light blades mean we don't need really strong turbines and tower parts, which saves money. Also, using carbon fibers lets us make longer blades, up to 100 meters! Longer blades mean more efficient energy generation, getting more wind power from each generator. And here's another cool thing โ blades made with carbon fibers don't corrode, making wind energy even more efficient. Big companies that make turbines, like Vestas Wind Systems A/S in Denmark and Gamesa Technology Corp in Spain, are starting to use carbon fibers more because they're just so good.
The wind energy sector is growing a lot all around the world. China led the way in 2021, contributing about 70% to the growth in wind power, followed by the United States at 14%, and Brazil at 7%. There was a massive 90% increase in how much wind energy we can produce in 2020, reaching 113 gigawatts. This happened because of some important rules in China and the United States. Most countries are pushing wind energy because of rules and support from the government. Things like auctions, feed-in tariffs, and contracts for difference help make more wind power. China, for example, has big plans to get 33% of its power from renewables by 2025, with 18% coming from wind and solar. In the United States, they passed a law called the Inflation Reduction Act in 2022 that supports renewable energy a lot for the next ten years. In Europe, they're thinking about increasing their renewable energy goal from 32% to 45% by 2030. Many countries in Europe are also helping renewable energy more because of the energy problems caused by Russia's invasion of Ukraine. India has big plans too, aiming for 500 gigawatts of non-fossil energy by 2030, with half of that from renewable sources, and a goal of no emissions by 2070. All these plans show that wind energy is on the rise, and it's becoming a big deal all over the world.
