Leading dry bulk ship owner Berge Bulk has announced the introduction of a newcastlemax bulk carrier equipped with four WindWings—a wind-powered technology that lowers emissions and fuel consumption.
Equipped with four BARTech WindWings from Yara Marine Technologies, the M/V Berg Olympus will sail between China and Brazil, which are both known for having ideal wind conditions. The 20-meter-wide and 37.5-meter-tall steel and composite-glass rigid sails can be adjusted to maximize the ship's fuel efficiency. The four wings' combined surface area of 3,000 square meters is actually more than three times larger than the wings of the A380, the largest passenger plane in the world.
Berge Bulk's ambitious goal to become carbon neutral by 2025 includes the installation. The company's Marshall Plan, a four-pillar decarbonization strategy, is centered on increasing fleet efficiency, utilizing cutting-edge maritime technology, testing new fuels, and making investments in carbon capture.
