On Aug. 29, 2023, Energy Storage Systems (ESS) firm Corvus Energy announced that the technology group Wärtsilä has contracted it to supply 40 MWh battery systems for a fully-electric lightweight ferry, Ro-Pax ferry. The battery systems are scheduled to be delivered by the end of 2024, with the vessel entering operation in 2025. Corvus Energy claims that the energy storage capacity of 40 MWh will be the largest battery system ever installed onboard a ship.

The company aims to become the world's leading marine battery maker with this new state-of-the-art automated manufacturing plant that ramps up production capacity to 300MWH a year with the ability to expand to 1GWH a year. The new factory will feed surging demand for marine batteries as the maritime sector seeks to hit revised IMO GHG targets.
On Jun. 21, 2023, Torqeedo GmbH launched a new battery in its Deep Blue series of marine electric drives, Deep Blue Battery 80, at the Electric & Hybrid Marine World Expo in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The new 80 kWh cell-to-pack LFP option for marine offers twice the capacity of the range, leveraging lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry. This advanced construction offsets the lower energy density of LFP batteries and enables a more compact footprint that is easier to install in many boats.
