A study team from the Fujian Institute of study on the Structure of Matter of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, under the direction of Prof. Zhu Qilong's group, has announced the development of a Ni single-atom catalyst (Ni SAC) for CO2-to-CO conversion and the convergent paired electrosynthesis of dimethyl carbonate.

The researchers found that the cathodic CO2RR and the anodic halide ion oxidation reaction can be coupled by convergent paired electrosynthesis to provide the essential intermediates for the synthesis of DMC. Since the efficient cathodic CO2-to-CO conversion predominates during this conversion, managing the electrocatalysts' micro-nanostructure requires a lot of effort.

Additionally, they demonstrated that the dual-channel superstructured Ni SAC is controllably constructed, has a distinctive site coordination configuration, and is capable of delivering a superior performance for CO2-to-CO conversion, achieving the purely high Faradaic efficiency (FE) and partial current densities with excellent stability.

The penta-coordinated Ni SAC was manipulated at the atomic, nanoscopic, and microscopic levels in order to produce CO, and this allowed for the first time to be accomplished the convergent paired electrosynthesis of DMC from CO2, resulting in the high FE of DMC.

This study suggests that the unique convergent paired electrosynthesis proof of concept may open the door for new breakthroughs in the CO2 utilisation sectors.
