Volta Energy Solutions Canada, a division of the South Korean firm Solus Advanced Materials, declared its intention to establish the nation's first copper foil facility for electric vehicle (EV) batteries in Granby, Quebec, by the year 2026. The facility is anticipated to generate 23,000 tonnes of battery-grade copper foil in its first year of operation, and then the yearly output would increase to 57,000 tonnes the following year. 57,000 tonnes of copper foil, according to Volta, would power about 2.5 million EVs.
After purchasing the Granby copper factory in 2022 for $81 million, Volta is now investing $750 million in it. Circuit Foil Luxembourg had previously owned the facility, which was closed in 2005.Â
Volta will receive support from the Canadian government as well, though the exact amount is still being worked out. The Quebec facility will be the first outside of Europe and Volta's third battery-grade copper foil production overall. Although its typical foils can be up to 20 micrometers thick depending on the intended use, Volta makes copper foil as thin as four micrometers (also known as microns) thick. Â

The South Korean company Lotte Chemical's subsidiary Lotte Energy Materials intends to invest KRW560 billion (US$430 million) in a plant in Spain that will produce copper foil for lithium-ion batteries used in electric vehicles (EVs).
The factory would be constructed close to Mont-Roig del Camp in Catalonia and initially have a capacity for 30,000 tonnes of premium copper foil annually. The facility will be operational in 2025 when construction starts in the second half of 2023.
Major market players, including Ecotech Ltd, Furukawa Electric Co. Ltd, Solus Advanced Materials, Doosan Corporation, and others, are attempting to increase market demand by funding R&D initiatives.
