    Latest Company Updates:

    August 2023

The first commercial concentrated photovoltaic and thermal storage project by RayGen has officially begun with the successful commissioning of a 4 MW solar plant at Carwarp, northwest Victoria, supported by 2.8 MW/50 MWh of long-duration storage. The company claims that AGL, a sizable energy retailer, will shortly purchase all of the plant's output.

The Carwarp plant integrates solar and hydro technologies from RayGen to provide renewable energy 24/7. The system employs a field of intelligent, rotating mirrors to focus sunlight onto a tower-mounted receiver that houses multiple PV modules. This solar energy is combined with the energy stored in two distinct water reservoirs to create a "hot and cold" solar hydro solution.

The Carwarp plant will give the West Murray grid an additional 4 MW of renewable energy and 17 hours of storage capacity. It is anticipated that the plant will produce enough renewable energy to run 1,700 typical Victorian homes.

This novel method of long-duration energy storage offers a potential remedy for long-duration energy storage by significantly enhancing the economics and efficiency of solar plus storage through the use of concentrated PV and thermal hydro storage.

The Norwegian floating photovoltaic thermal (CPVT) specialist Svalin Solar and the Norway-based research firm Sintef are currently working on a floating CPVT receiver designed to be used in carbon capture facilities. The new technology, according to the two companies, is a carbon capture system that uses solar assistance to generate thermal energy required for gas separation, either fully or partially.
