  Oct 2023: Becton Dickinson and Casella Waste Systems released The latest findings of a recycling pilot program to handle discarded syringes and needles. The program resulted in the recycling and diversion of 40,000 lb of medical waste from disposal. The first significant attempt to evaluate the viability of recycling medical waste discovered in red sharps containers was the circular economy pilot conducted in the first half of 2023. Syringes and needles were among these containers' many medical supplies and equipment. All the plastics in the medical trash were recycled rather than disposed of after being gathered from various healthcare facilities. Additionally, the pilot evaluated the technical viability of advanced and mechanical recycling, demonstrating promising results regarding their ability to recycle used medical devices for use in other products.
