Autonomous Emergency Braking System Industry Developments

April 2024- In April 2024, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration planned to grow current research into the frightening tendency of some modern Hondas to prompt their automatic emergency braking systems inappropriately. Research has shown that automatic emergency braking systems have lowered road deaths in the US, China, and Europe, but so-called phantom braking problems have dogged systems from Honda and Tesla.

May 2024- The part of Teledyne Technologies Incorporated, Teledyne FLIR, commits the National Highway Transportation Safety Commission (NHTSA) to complete a Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard that will need pedestrian automatic emergency braking (PAEB) on all passenger cars and light trucks by September 2029. More than three-quarters of pedestrian fatalities and nearly half of pedestrian injuries appear in darkness. The final rule puts an upper bound on the need for a PAEB system to function at 73 km/h (45.4 mph) in daylight or darkness, needing automakers to importantly enhance the performance of existing PAEB systems by the end of the decade.

The vice president and general manager of Teledyne FLIR, Paul Clayton, said that present AEB hardware on light vehicles mainly comprises radar or a combination of radar and visible cameras. To acquire improved safety at the new PAEB, which needs lighting conditions, speeds, and false-positive requirements, automakers should implement sensing technologies that are more effective at night and in low-visibility conditions. Teledyne FLIR has showcased that thermal imaging technology incorporated into current AEB systems can assist automotive manufacturers in fulfilling the latest needs and saving lives. More than 1.2 million cars depend on Teledyne FLIR thermal sensors as a fraction of driver warning systems. With a deliberate partnership with leading tier-one automotive supplier Valeo, Teledyne FLIR is allowing automotive OEMs to quickly integrate thermal imaging into the AEB systems of the future.
