November 2023- The New Car Assessment Programme for Latin America and the Caribbean, Latin NCAP, tested in December 2022 the Misubishi Outlander and achieved five stars. At that time, only the Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) version was available in the region. As the Plug-in Hybrid version (PHEV) entered the market, Latin NCAP has now tested it to confirm whether both versions offer the same safety ratings. The ICE and PHEV versions of the Mitsubishi Outlander have architectural differences due to the powertrain. Therefore, Latin NCAP performed the frontal impact test as well as dynamic moose tests of the PHEV version for confirmation, which showed slight performance differences within the acceptable margins of Latin NCAP. The Adult Protection box was updated; however, the model still robustly reaches the five-star requirements. The PHEV version of the Mitsubishi Outlander is Latin NCAP's first-ever test of a car fitted with a center airbag, a safety item already required in other markets like Europe and the US to reach good scores in local consumer tests and that Latin NCAP will consider for future assessments.
October 2023- GM is recalling nearly 10,000 Chevrolet Cruze and Buick Verano sedans from the 2014 model year because of a problem with their side curtain airbags, which are also called roof-rail airbags. The airbag inflators could rupture without a collision occurring and propel parts into the cabin or outside of the vehicle, which could injure vehicle occupants or bystanders. An unexpected airbag deployment could also startle a driver. A GM spokesperson told CR that the automaker is not aware of any injuries related to this recall. GM says that owners of the vehicles will be notified by mail starting in November and will receive a second notice letting them know when they can bring their vehicles to a dealership to have the faulty airbags replaced free of charge. In the meantime, GM told CR that it would not provide loaner vehicles to owners who are awaiting a repair and recommended that they check GM's recall website for the status of when replacement parts will be available. The automaker recalled over 410,000 pickup trucks in July 2021 for a similar problem. However, GM says the earlier recall is unrelated, as those vehicles use a different airbag from a different supplier.
