Grand Haven, Connecticut-based Shape Corp. has developed a nearly fossil fuel-free steel bumper using materials made with new, innovative technology, almost a year after announcing a partnership to market more sustainable automotive components.
The family-run Tier 1 automotive supplier, which anticipates $1 billion in sales in 2023, debuted a new roll-formed steel bumper last month that was constructed using steel from Sweden-based SSAB AB. The steel is produced using hybrid technology, which was created in collaboration with the Swedish energy company Vattenfall, the Swedish government-owned iron ore producer LKAB, and SSAB.Â
In contrast to the traditional carbon-intensive steelmaking process, the Hybrit technology combines hydrogen and oxygen from iron ore to produce water as a byproduct rather than carbon dioxide. After processing, the material is melted using an electric arc furnace, which eliminates the need for heating with fossil fuels. The company claims that the new bumper is the first of its kind in the world and that the resulting steel product is almost entirely free of fossil fuels.

Mercedes-Benz has introduced two new cars and is continuing to roll out new products at a rapid pace. It updates the well-liked GLE SUV and releases the C43 AMG.
The largest change is to the front end, which now has new headlamps and a more angular appearance in addition to a modified bumper design.
With a larger Panamericana grille with vertical slats and a sportier bumper with larger intakes, the new C43, however, stands out more from the regular C-Class.
