Sep 2023: Torrent Pharma is reportedly trying to raise the money required to acquire the Cipla promoter family. Torrent has approached several private equity (PE) groups regarding a minority investment in the business, including Advent Worldwide, Bain Capital, Warburg Pincus, and CVC Capital. With an equity investment of almost Rs 8,000 crore ($1 billion), this could be the nation's biggest acquisition in the pharmaceutical industry to date. Furthermore, the Ahmedabad-based Torrent is negotiating share-backed promoter financing worth roughly Rs 9,000–10,000 crore ($1.1 billion) with domestic shadow banks and mutual funds. Regarding operations, chronic and sub-chronic segments account for over 70% of revenue for both Torrent and Cipla. Cipla has historically concentrated on the respiratory, anti-infectives, and urology segments, whereas Torrent possesses strengths in the therapeutic areas of cardiac, diabetes, neuro/CNS, and gastro. According to industry experts, their combined portfolio may consist of 33 mega brands—each with a turnover above Rs 100 crore—and leading positions in 270 brands within their respective therapeutic areas.
