October 2023- The U.S. Marine Corps, which specializes in expeditionary warfare, is requesting an unmanned armored combat vehicle from Oshkosh Defense LLC in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, to serve as a mission carrier for the Corps' next land-based anti-ship missile system. June 2023- Japan’s Ministry of Defense has recently announced that it has granted Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI) a contract to research and develop an advanced coastal, anti-ship cruise missile. The contract awarded for the new surface-to-ship missile (SSM) is among several missile projects recently unveiled by Tokyo to strengthen “island defense” as part of the country’s Defense Buildup Program. The introduction of this cutting-edge SSM aims to deter potential Chinese military aggression along the First Island Chain, with likely deployment envisaged on Japan’s southern islands, including the strategically vital Senkaku Islands.
May 2023- The Royal Australian Navy has awarded Rheinmetall a €125 million ($138 million) contract to supply anti-ship systems. The system consists of up to six launchers, each capable of firing up to 32 Omnitrap decoy rounds. This ship-based system protects against sensor- and laser-guided anti-ship missiles in all significant wavelengths of electromagnetic spectrum, as claimed by the manufacturer. The system can be equipped on all vessels operating on the high seas, coastal waters and rivers.
