Other research initiatives are stem cell therapies and mitochondrial DNA transfers. However these research is still in its infant developmental stage. Current research aims to increase energy production in the form of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) or to reduce production of free radical. Another strategy is to increase critical enzymatic reactions and scavenge toxic coenzymes, which accumulate during mitochondrial disease.
