Amidst the COVID-19 outbreak, investors and manufacturers are pulling back production and reconsidering investments. This is expected to act as a key headwind for the growth of the global automotive market. The halt in the production of vehicles has affected the demand for braking systems globally. The pandemic is expected to have a negative impact on the global braking systems market in the short term (2020–2021). However, the long-term growth of the automotive braking system market is expected to remain positive.

Automotive Braking System Market Competitive Landscape

The global automotive braking system market is characterized by the presence of many local, regional, and global vendors. The automotive braking system market is highly competitive, with all the players continually competing to gain a larger market share. High competition, rapid advances in technology, frequent changes in government policies, and stringent environmental regulations are some of the critical factors that could restrain the automotive braking system market growth. The vendors compete in terms of cost, product quality, reliability, and aftermarket services.

Robert Bosch GmbH, Continental AG, ZF Friedrichshafen AG, Delphi Technologies, Mando Corp., and Valeo are some of the key players operating in the global automotive braking system market.

ABS Market Segmentation:

Automotive Braking System Market Based on brake type:

  • Disc brake: Disc brakes are mechanisms used for slowing or stopping the rotation of a wheel from its motion. It is made using cast iron, but in some cases, it is also made of composites such as carbon-carbon or ceramic-matrix. It consists of a disc brake rotor, calipers, and brake pads. Disc brakes are less likely to lock up since their functioning is more straightforward and does not include a lot of small movements that increase the risk of failure.

  • Drum brake: The drum brake is one of the oldest mechanical brakes. Even though they are less technologically advanced compared to other brakes, they are still used in vehicles. Brake shoes are a drum brake’s main component, which sets it apart from disc brakes. This old type of brake is made using a small round drum. It contains the shoes, which press against the sides of the drum to generate friction and slow down the vehicle. The friction causes the wheel to slow down as the brake drum is directly attached to the wheel.

Automotive Braking System Market Based on brake system:

  • ABS: Anti-lock braking systems (ABS) are safe anti-skid braking systems that are used in aircraft. It is also used in cars, motorcycles, and buses. ABS functions by preventing the wheels from locking up while braking, by keeping a tractive connection with the road surface. It significantly increases braking distance and improves steering control. TCS: A traction control system (TCS) is an active vehicle safety feature that is designed to help vehicles ensure the effective use of all the traction available on the road while accelerating on low-friction road surfaces. TCS is used to help drivers accelerate when roads are wet, icy, uneven, loose, and poorly maintained. TCS works similarly to anti-lock braking systems (ABS) and is often considered as a supplement to existing ABS. ESC: Electronic stability control (ESC) is an active safety feature that is designed to reduce the number and severity of accidents, resulting from the driver’s loss of control. It uses computer-controlled technology to apply individual brakes and help bring the car safely back on track. It also offers traction and anti-skid support in case of oversteering and understeering. The ESC systems are made up of several subcomponents that are monitored and controlled by an electronic control unit (ECU). Others: The other segment of automotive braking system Market includes regenerative braking systems (RBS), automatic emergency braking (AEB), and electric parking braking (EPB). The regenerative braking system (RBS) is an advanced and supplementary braking system. RBS is used along with the conventional braking system in modern electric/hybrid vehicles to lower energy consumption in hybrid vehicles and reduce their carbon footprint. It can also increase the range of electric vehicles (EVs). However, automatic emergency braking (AEB) is a feature that alerts a driver of an imminent crash and helps them use the maximum braking capacity of the vehicle. AEB can independently brake if the situation becomes critical, and no human response is made.

Automotive Braking System Market Based on components:

  • Master cylinder: The master cylinder is a plunger that is activated by the brake pedal. It is what holds the brake fluid and forces it through the brake lines when activated. It is placed far from the braking system and uses tubes to push hydraulic fluids towards the caliper. There are two individual cylinders in a single unit and each cylinder manages the braking ability of the two front wheels. If one cylinder fails, the other cylinder can still slow down the wheels.

  • Brake pad: The brake pads rub against the drums or rotors. They are manufactured using composite materials and designed to last for thousands of miles. However, if there is a grinding or howling noise when the driver tries to stop their vehicle, it likely means it is time to replace the brake pads. Brake pads are mounted on the disc brake system, where these pads act as friction lining.

  • Disc: It is a cast iron brake disc connected to the wheel and/or axle, sometimes made of reinforced carbon-carbon, ceramic matrix, or another composite. Each wheel has a brake disc, which spins while the vehicle is moving. The brake pad and caliper rub against the disc and create the friction required to slow down the disc.

  • Calipers: The entire housing of the brake system is called the caliper. It is mounted on the axle and has no direct contact with the disc/rotor until the brake is applied, enabling full and easy movement of the wheels. This component pushes the pad/shoe onto the rotor and grips the rotor when the driver applies the brake pedal. The caliper has hydraulic pistons that are connected to a series of hoses, which supply the brake fluid.

  • Vacuum servo brake: A vacuum servo is a component used in the braking system of a vehicle to assist the driver by decreasing the braking effort. It consists of a valve and a diaphragm. As the brakes are applied, the brake pedal moves forward, which closes the vacuum port and opens the air inlet valve.

  • Brake drum: The brake drum is an alternative to a disc/rotor in drum brake systems. As the drum component spins, the brake shoe shifts inside and pushes against it when the driver steps on the brake pedal. The brake drum is made up of cast iron, as it is more heat resistant.

  • Others: The other segment of automotive braking system market includes brake lines, brake hoses, brake pedals, and anti-lock sensors.

Automotive Braking System Market Based on vehicle type:

  • Passenger vehicle: Passenger carrying vehicles (PCVs) are used to carry passengers rather than goods. There is an increase in the demand for PCVs, owing to the increase in population, high purchasing power, and favorable regulations. There are several hydraulic brake systems installed in passenger-carrying vehicles, such as anti-lock braking system (ABS), traction control system (TCS), and electronic stability control (ESC).

  • Light commercial vehicle: Light commercial vehicles (LCVs) include mini-vans, pickup trucks, and buses. The rise in the processing, manufacturing, and logistics sectors, along with the continuous growth in the tourism and hospitality industries, are increasing the demand for LCVs.

  • Heavy commercial vehicle: Heavy commercial vehicles (HCVs) include heavy trucks, tractors, and trailers. The growing transportation & logistics industry across the globe is primarily boosting the sales of HCVs. The growth in the use of combination vehicles, such as truck trailers and semi-trailers, further raises the demand for electronic speed sensors and controllers.

Automotive Braking System Market Based on region:

  • Europe: Component manufacturers use improved technology in their products to gain a competitive edge and increase their revenue generation. The high export of automobiles and related components, including the automotive braking system will drive the automotive braking system market growth during the forecast period. Moreover, the increasing demand for automotive braking systems and components from international automotive manufacturers, including Mercedes, BMW, and Audi, encourages global industry players that improve and developed their operation networks in Europe. Germany is one of the pioneers of engineering in the automotive industry.

  • North America: The growing need for passenger comfort and safety will boost the demand for automotive braking systems in the region. The increasing disposable income of the individual in the region is expected to accentuate the automotive braking system market share during the forecast period. The planned mergers & acquisitions, strategic collaborations, and joint ventures of regional industry players are expected to enhance market penetration in the region.

  • Asia-Pacific: The growing auto component manufacturing including automotive braking systems, especially in China, Japan, and India will primarily drive the automotive sector in the region.
