By Garvit Vyas , 25 August, 2023
India has topped the global rice export market in 2022, exporting 21.5 million metric tons of rice, according to the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI). This is the second consecutive year that India has topped the rice export market.
Thailand came in second place, exporting 8.2 million metric tons of rice. Vietnam, Pakistan, and the United States rounded out the top five rice exporters.
The global rice market is expected to continue to grow in the coming years, driven by the increasing demand for rice in developing countries.
The IRRI said that the growth of the global rice market is being driven by a number of factors, including:
- The increasing population in developing countries
- The growing affluence of people in developing countries, which is leading to a change in dietary preferences
- The increasing demand for rice for biofuel production
The IRRI also said that the global rice market is facing a number of challenges, including:
- The impact of climate change on rice production
- The increasing incidence of pests and diseases
- The high cost of production
Despite these challenges, the IRRI is optimistic about the future of the global rice market. The institute said that there is still a large untapped potential for rice production in many developing countries.
