Sensors plus their convenience
A device that reacts and responds to input via our physical environment is called a sensor. Specific environmental aspects such as light, heat, temperature, pressure, and moisture, add to the sensitivity. A sensor can detect the output in the presence or absence of the object (binary) or the measurement valued attained (analog or digital).Â
Uses of SensorsÂ
Technological advancement has taken giant leaps in making human lives more convenient. There are various kinds of sensors around us. From the early morning coffee to the fitness band to track our activities and maintain a healthy lifestyle, the remote used to dim the lights, and the Google Maps to help locate our favorite store via audio directions. We are surrounded by sensors daily.Â
Demand for sensor and performance of the industry
According to popular survey, the global market for sensors was valued at $138.965 million. It is estimated to grow at CAGR 9.5% between 2019-2025, reaching a galloping $287 billion by 2025. A detailed analysis reveals the utility of sensor technology in various areas utilizing sensor-technology. Few of these sectors are- Industrial, IT, telecommunication, electronics, aerospace, defense, and healthcare. With the rise in the demand for electronic devices, discoveries in the bio-medical sector and development in the automotive industry have created a rising demand for sensors. The concept of smart cities has also led to the manufacture and use of sensors, adding to the efficiency of lifestyle through technological advancement.Â
Types of Sensors
1.Vision and Imaging Sensors
Electronic devices that can detect any object within their field of vision, converting the information into a visual of the display, are the optical sensors. Light rings around the sensors are used for the illumination of optics. At times, image acquisition systems and image processing applications merge into a "smart-camera" that uses levels of embedded vision. Lenses are often employed to capture wide-angle or telephoto images.Â
2.Proximity SensorsÂ
Devices that track the presence of nearby objects through a no-contact mode are proximity sensors. These sensors are used in numerous manufacturing operations to identify parts of a machine. It can track the motion of objects up to a distance of few millimeters. The capacitive proximity sensor enables the user to detect the movement and position of an article.Â
3.Temperature SensorsÂ
The temperature sensor uses the mechanics of RTD or thermistor to measure temperature and assign it to an output voltage. To measure the thermal characteristics of solids, liquids, and gases in process industries as well as for specific users, temperature sensors are utilized. Thermometers are a quotidian instrument which uses the mechanism of a temperature sensor.Â
4.Radiation Sensors
The radiation sensor detects the alpha, beta, and gamma particles to present signals to display devices. Minimum and maximum detectable energies are the key specifications of the sensor. Mostly these sensors are used for sample counting and surveys.Â
5.Photoelectric Sensors
Used in electrical devices that sense objects passing in their field of vision. With the use of an emitter and a receiver, they measure changes in light. Mostly used for manufacturing and automation, in counting, robot picking, and automatic gates and doors.Â
