June 2022

Du – the Emirates Integrated Telecommunications Company – reached a significant milestone: it successfully demonstrated support for Voice over New Radio (VoNR) over a 5G network in partnership with Nokia and Huawei. The trial featured an advanced 5G core network developed in collaboration with Huawei and utilized Nokia's IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) Platform. VoNR is an important step towards more immersive calling apps on future 5Gs and total Standalone SA capability realization of complete 5Gs, according to Du's statement. With this technology, which allows for uninterrupted high-speed data transmission during calls, among other things, Dubai-based companies can provide seamless 5G connections.


Samsung Electronics has developed its own comprehensive solution for Voice over New Radio (VoNR) that enables international mobile device manufacturers and network operators to provide 5G voice call services globally, it said in September last year. The VoNR service deployment is streamlined through SoC development offered by Samsung with this comprehensive solution for VoNR. It makes voice calls directly using the current 5G network without switching back to the legacy system as current approaches work; thus, it is more likely to keep up connection faster when starting or answering phone calls besides staying connected throughout talk time between both ends since there is no need to switch between networks while playing online games requiring heavy data streaming or watching video clips at high resolutions where true speeds are achieved only with these latest-generation devices.


In April next year, GlobalData will release a joint white paper with Huawei entitled “The Convergence of Voice Services Over IP Networks”. The research outlines challenges faced by operators running voice networks across multiple generations and proposes building a convergent voice network that solves problems arising from transitions between different types of communication infrastructures. It also highlights new areas for development within the field of speech based on high-value services supported by IMS data channels, such as those found on LTE network. GlobalData recently conducted a survey among 50 mobile operators worldwide regarding their strategies towards voice service provision and related issues.


In September last year, Samsung Electronics unveiled its new comprehensive solution for Voice over New Radio (VoNR) technology that will enable global mobile device manufacturers and network operators to provide 5G voice call services. The South Korean company’s VoNR service deployment is streamlined through SoC development offered by it with this comprehensive solution for VoNR. The company said that the current approach to voice calls on a 5G network switches into a 4G network; however, VoNR supports both voice calls and data service using the 5G network without switching between networks while making voice calls, thus increasing the probability of maintaining connection during a voice call as well as faster call connection times so that users do not need to hang up or be put on hold when playing online games requiring heavy data streaming or watching video clips at high resolutions where true speeds can only be achieved by such latest-generation devices.
