New Face Of Lithium-Sulfur Batteries For The Low-Cost Batteries In 2024

By Shubhendra Anand , 15 May, 2024

Solid-state batteries have not been in use for a long time. However, the rising demand for electric vehicles in the automotive market may revamp the sulfur content of solid-state batteries. There are many advantages of sulfur in solid-state batteries. Therefore, research in solid-state batteries leads to a crystal of sulfur and iodine to be the main component in 2024.

Researchers have found a new cathode material, sulfur, for solid-state batteries in 2024. These solid-state batteries can be lithium-sulfur ones that can be pivotal in the green energy transition. Lithium-sulfur batteries facilitate clean energy transformation as they help produce low-cost batteries in the industrial sector. With the help of low-cost batteries in the market, the transformation of the environment can grow exponentially. The clean energy transition is currently at stack due to a lack of resources supporting greener transformation. The resources for the clean energy transition include low-cost batteries, too. However, the global market experiences are at the edge of low-cost battery production, which needs to increase to get results by the end of 2050.

According to new research on lithium-sulfur batteries, the cathode comprises sulfur, and the anode is made of lithium. This lithium-sulfur battery is a rechargeable battery expected to support the transition to clean energy. Lithium-sulfur batteries can be a significant change in the electric vehicles market. It is lightweight and can hold twice the energy of lithium-ion batteries. Therefore, it can increase the battery range in electric vehicles by being lighter than conventional batteries. However, sulfur batteries break down often due to technical problems while charging electric vehicles. Therefore, researchers found a crystal composed of sulfur and iodine to be the main component in 2024. Crystals of sulfur and iodine have a low melting point of 65 degrees Celsius, leading to easy charging. The cathode with sulfur and iodine crystals can also be melted after the battery is charged to mend the damages from regular intervals of charging and discharging. Therefore, researchers are ready to increase the efficiency of lithium-sulfur battery technology to get into the production sector soon.
